One of the pioneers of awakening Bengali women is the poet Begum Sufia Kamal. Today is his 107th birth anniversary. He was born on 20 June 1911 in the maternal uncle's house in Shayestabad, Barisal. Sufia Kamal was born in an elite family of Shastast in Barisal.

Sufia Kamal was introduced to Rokeya with 'Anjuman Khwatinay Islam' organization founded by Begum Rokeya for encouraging Muslim women to participate in cultural activities. Begum Rokeya's thoughts and promises also spread in her, which have a far-reaching effect in her life.
As well as raising social awareness, his literary pursuits continued. In 1937, his story was published in the collection of worms. In 1938, Kazi Nazrul Islam wrote his first book, Sajhagar Maayar Mukhtha. The book was praised by the people of Ridhindranath Tagore.

He established the Women's Council in 1970 under the dhamadol of the liberation movement of the Bengalis. In 1956, Kochi-Kartar Mela was established in the children's organization. He edited the magazine 'Begum' before the country's division.
She has played a key role in the struggle for establishment of women's rights and equal rights in Bangladesh. Sufia Kamal had an unconventional role in every movement of Bengal. He always tried to organize women to uphold humanity, non-communalism, patriotism and democratic values.
Besides, he was unconvinced against communalism and fundamentalism. Poet Sufia Kamal died on November 20, 1999. He was the first Bengali woman to be buried in state honor after death.
Poet son Shahed Kamal Shamim is still teaching in Dhaka University's Mass Communication and Journalism Department.
